Testing Reagents
Course Objectives
The purpose of this article is to be able to:
- Identify the different types of testing reagents commonly used in clinical laboratories and recognize their specific roles in diagnostic testing.
- Explain how proper specimen collection and handling directly impact reagent performance and the accuracy of test results.
- Recognize the signs of compromised reagents (e.g., contamination, degradation, expiration) and understand how these issues can affect laboratory outcomes.
- Describe the importance of reagent storage requirements, including temperature control, light exposure, and labeling practices.
- Highlight the connection between phlebotomy practices and laboratory quality assurance reinforcing the role of the phlebotomist in supporting the overall testing process.
Course Content
Course Creator: Kristen Moylan BSPH, CCRC
Total CE Hours: 1 Credit Hour
Pace Course #: 586-2506-25
Course Description: This course offers a comprehensive exploration of testing reagents and their significance within the clinical laboratory environment. Though phlebotomists are primarily responsible for the accurate collection and labeling of specimens, their role is closely tied to the quality and reliability of the results produced downstream. Understanding how reagents function, both chemically and operationally, empowers phlebotomists to better support the diagnostic process and contribute to more accurate patient outcomes.
Participants will learn about the different types of reagents used in routine laboratory testing, including reagents for hematology, chemistry panels, immunoassays, and rapid diagnostic tests. The course will also cover best practices for reagent storage, expiration monitoring, and how improper sample handling can compromise reagent performance. Additionally, it will highlight how reagent-related errors, such as contamination, degradation, or incompatibility, can affect test results and patient care.
By building foundational knowledge in this area, the course bridges the gap between specimen collection and laboratory analysis, reinforcing the importance of quality at every step. This enhanced perspective not only strengthens interdepartmental collaboration but also supports professional growth and accountability within the phlebotomy field.
Whether working in hospitals, clinics, or outpatient labs, those who complete this course will gain a clearer understanding of how their work interacts with critical chemical processes behind the scenes, and why their attention to detail continues to matter long after the blood draw is complete.
