Hemodialysis: A Phlebotomy Perspective

Course Objectives
  1. Define hemodialysis and describe its purpose in clinical care.
  2. Identify patient populations commonly receiving dialysis and their unique phlebotomy needs.
  3. Apply appropriate blood collection protocols to protect vascular access in dialysis patients.
  4. Recognize common complications, misconceptions, and safety risks related to phlebotomy in the dialysis setting.
  5. Demonstrate effective communication strategies when working with dialysis patients and care teams.

Course Description: This article provides phlebotomists with a clear and practical foundation in hemodialysis—what it is, who depends on it, and why it matters in clinical practice. Special attention is given to the phlebotomist’s role in preserving dialysis access, preventing complications, and collaborating with care teams. With rising rates of end-stage renal disease (ESRD), understanding the unique considerations in collecting specimens from dialysis patients is more important than ever. Through case examples, protocol reminders, and myth-busting facts, this article equips phlebotomists to navigate dialysis-related scenarios with confidence and care.
