Stackable certifications:2
The AMT offers stackable certifications that can be acquired to move along a career pathway by enhancing qualifications and increasing one's value in the workplace. For example, A Registered Medical Assistant (RMA) qualifies to stack the Registered Phlebotomy Technician (RPT) and/or the Clinical Medical Laboratory Assistant (CMLA) certification.
Offers Reach Certificates:3
Reach certifications are based on a specific skill set. These certificates show mastery of a specific subject matter. Not only does it give one an advantage over their peers, but it also counts as continuing education for recertification. (These certificates last for 3 years.)
Length of test (time): 2.5 hours

Eligibility to sit for the exam:
Route 1: Applicant shall have successfully completed (or be scheduled to complete) an approved academic course (or combined courses) of study in phlebotomy within the past 4 years. This must include at least 120 didactic clock hours (or as required by state law). AND shall have successfully completed a minimum of 50 venipunctures and 10 skin punctures from human sources
Route 2: Applicant shall have completed a minimum of 1,040 hours of acceptable work experience* as a phlebotomy technician within the past 3 years (the equivalent of 6 months of full-time employment). This includes venipunctures, capillary punctures, specimen processing, communication skills, and clerical duties. AND shall have successfully completed a minimum of 50 venipunctures and 10 skin punctures from human sources
***All acceptable phlebotomy work experience credited towards certification must be earned in an approved healthcare facility that collects, examines, or transports materials derived from the human body.
State-specific information:
California requires all Phlebotomy Technicians or Phlebotomists who work in California to hold a California Phlebotomy License through an approved certifying organization. (AMT is an approved certifying organization by the State of California) A separate application will need to be sent to the state.
Renewal information:
Yearly: Registered Phlebotomy Technicians are required to pay an annual fee to maintain active certified status and member benefits. Fees are due the month of the anniversary that one was certified. Renewal notices are sent through email and mail. The COST is $75 yearly.
Every 3 Years: Registered Phlebotomy Technicians must report 24 continuing education credits (CE) that are part of the Certification Continuation Program (CCP).
