Eligibility to sit for the exam:

You must apply to take the exam. Applications must be received and processed two weeks before the exam date. When you apply to take the exam, ASPT will email you a study guide.

First: Apply for the exam 
To be eligible for the ASPT certification exam, you must have completed an approved phlebotomy training program or have at least one year of part-time or six months of full-time phlebotomy experience. After confirming your eligibility, you can apply for the exam through the ASPT's website. https://www.aspt.org/exams-2?view=calendar&month=03-2024

Qualifications for this certificate are (choose 1 of 2 options): 

  1. One full year as a part-time Phlebotomist or six months as a full-time Phlebotomist with a letter from a healthcare supervisor attesting that part of the job is procuring blood specimens regularly must be submitted with the membership application on facility letterhead OR signature of supervisor/instructor on application attesting to the above.
  2. Successful completion of an accredited phlebotomy training program and proof of 75 successful venipunctures and 5 finger sticks. Must submit venipuncture log before testing. https://www.aspt.org/home/covid (Information+Packet+2024.pdf)

Second: Schedule the exam
Once your application has been approved, you can schedule your exam. The ASPT offers several testing locations throughout the United States. You can choose the most convenient location for you. Third: Take the Exam
On the day of the exam, arrive at your chosen testing location with a valid photo ID. The exam will cover all aspects of phlebotomy, including both theory and practical skills. You will need to achieve a passing score to receive your certification.

Online Exam option:

When applying for an online exam, it is required to have the following:

  1. Valid email address and be able to confirm once emailed instructions to take the online exam.
  2. Good quality internet service and connection – ASPT is not responsible for any interruption in service during the exam. You cannot take the exam on your cell phone or tablet; you must use a laptop or desktop computer.
  3. You must have a good working phone number so we can communicate if necessary.
  4. You must be able to confirm the first email to move forward with testing.
  5.  If you are taking this exam based on your experience, you may want to purchase a manual on their website at aspt.org. Their exam is designed to follow the information in the manual (To order, go to https://www.aspt.org/sundries-1). Once the email inviting you to take the online exam is received, it cannot be opened until the date and time the exam has been scheduled. The applicant will not be given any additional time to take the exam. 

 

Renewal information:
Renew annually every year on December 31st. Required to complete 6 continuing education credits and pay a $35 fee
