Length of test (time): 120 minutes (2 hours)
Number of questions on the exam: 120 questions, 100 questions are scored
Cost to take the test: $125

  • Patient Care
  • Compliance, Safety, and Professional Responsibility
  • Infection Control
  • Phlebotomy
  • EKG (Electrocardiogram)


Eligibility to sit for the exam:

  • Attain a high school diploma or equivalent certification
  • Complete a training program (must be within 5 years of sitting for the exam) OR
  • Fulfill the work experience requirement as laid out by the NHA
  • Successfully complete (and have the ability to prove completion) 30 venipunctures and 10 capillary or finger sticks.

Renewal information:

  • Every two years, each NHA CPT must pay a $185 renewal fee3; this includes the cost of all 10 continuing education (CE) credits required for renewal.
  • If you do not recertify in time, there is a 30-day grace period to renew your certification following the normal steps.3 However, if you go over 30 days but are still within one year, you will go through the reinstatement process.3 This involves an increased renewal fee, a reinstatement fee, and a few more continuing education credits.3
  • If you wait over a year, you must sit for the NHA exam again.3 If you fail to renew in time but are still within one year, you will be required to complete an additional 5 CE credits (making the renewal fee $277.50) and pay a $99 reinstatement fee, making the total cost $376.50.3 Completing these CE credits is as easy as finding courses that interest you on your NHA portal, reading through the content, and successfully passing the test.
