What Is the ASCP Phlebotomy Technician (PBT) Certification?

The ASCP Phlebotomy Technician (PBT) certification is a nationally recognized credential that validates a healthcare professional's ability to safely collect, transport, process, and handle blood and other laboratory specimens. Offered by the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) Board of Certification, the PBT credential demonstrates competency in specimen collection, patient safety, infection control, laboratory operations, and specimen processing.

Many employers consider the ASCP Board of Certification the gold standard for laboratory credentials, making the PBT certification a valuable qualification for individuals pursuing a career in phlebotomy.

What Is a Phlebotomy Technician (PBT)?

A PBT works face-to-face with patients to draw blood samples. They are also responsible for  collecting, transporting, and processing blood and other specimens to be analyzed in the laboratory.

The American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP), Phlebotomy Technician, PBT(ASCP) validates the technician's ability and knowledge to adhere to laboratory safety protocols and infection control while collecting, transporting, and processing blood or other specimens to be analyzed in the laboratory. Phlebotomy Technicians work under the general supervision of a medical doctor, licensed healthcare practitioner, or laboratory supervisor. Candidates must meet a combination of eligibility requirements and pass a written exam.
